Adapazari: Shining object explodes, kills dog
In early May 1948, a bright unknown object flew over Adapazari, Turkey, exploded mid-air, and scattered debris that killed a dog. US Air Force investigated possible Soviet flying disc link despite rocket confirmation.
Background
Incident
A shining unidentified object moved in from the northwest over Adapazari in Sakarya Province, Turkey in early May 1948. It exploded high in the air and rained fragments down on a nearby village, killing a dog.
Investigation
The debris was identified as rocket parts. Even so, the US Air Force instructed its air attaché in Ankara to examine a possible connection to Russian experiments with flying discs. This reflects the uncertainty about UFO sightings at the time.
Significance
The case shows how conventional explanations such as rockets were mixed with unconfirmed speculation about foreign technology. It is documented in Project Blue Book (file 1948-05-9670225) and points to military concern about Soviet activity.
