US: Holt publishes Scully's saucer crash claims book
Henry Holt released Frank Scully's book alleging US recovery of a crashed saucer and alien pilots. A congressman criticized it for fueling hysteria amid Korean War tensions.
Background
Publication
On September 8, 1950, Henry Holt published the second book devoted exclusively to UFOs: Frank Scully's work. It claimed sensationally that the US government had recovered a crashed flying object along with several dead pilots.
Political Reaction
Rep. Edward H. Jenison (R-Ill.) condemned the publication sharply. He saw it as contributing to mass hysteria during the Korean War.
Public Impact
USAF officer Clare Welch estimated that thanks to the book 3β4 million people had heard of flying saucers. The work popularised crash retrievals and magnetic propulsion, drawing on sources such as Silas Newton and "Dr. Gee".
Significance
The book set off debate and was later exposed as a hoax (for instance the Aztec case). It shaped UFO narratives despite the criticism and contributed to their sensationalisation.
