Davis, CA: Multiple colorful UFOs, F-94 scrambled
Ground Observer Corps spotters in Davis, California, observed a hovering rainbow-colored object followed by eight more unusual ones, prompting an Air Force F-94 jet scramble. A cigar-shaped object was also sighted in nearby Napa at high speed.
Background
Sighting in Davis
On August 15, 1952 at 4:20 in the morning, Ground Observer Corps observers in Davis, California reported a round object with rainbow colours hovering in the air. Shortly afterwards eight further objects of strange shape appeared. At 5:30 two more UFOs were observed, one moving west and one east.
Military Response
The Air Force sent an F-94 jet to investigate at altitudes between 10,000 and 20,000 feet. Officially the pilot reported nothing unusual, but the GOC observers saw both the UFOs and the jet in the sky at the same time, possibly at similar altitude.
Additional Sighting in Napa
At 5:00, Diane Robinson, a GOC observer in Napa, California, noticed a silver cigar-shaped object at 10,000 feet flying southwest at enormous speed.
Significance
The case shows conflicts between ground witnesses and military pilots and illustrates the role of the GOC network in UFO reporting. Sources: NICAP and Loren E. Gross.
