Vancouver Island: Radar UFO responds to IFF, splits
Unidentified radar target over central Vancouver Island responded correctly to coded IFF signals from US radar sites and split into two objects, outmaneuvering F-86D interceptors tracked on multiple radars.
Background
Event Details
On June 22, 1954 at 20:14, an unidentified radar echo was detected over the central part of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It responded to coded IFF Mode 1 signals from Naselle Air Force Station in Washington State with precise replies.
Radar Observations
The target was tracked by three ground radars: Naselle and McChord AFB in Tacoma. The object divided into two parts, or consisted of units flying close together that then separated.
Military Response
Two F-86D jet interceptors were dispatched; both radars showed the UFOs. The objects outmanoeuvred the fighters with ease.
Further Notes
Possible sightings were reported to sheriff's offices and to the media. The case went to Project Blue Book but does not appear in its files. Sources: NICAP, Sparks p. 221. Significance: it indicates advanced technology with a knowledge of IFF.
