Background

Background

The event concerns an investigation by the Brazilian navy into sightings and photographs of an unidentified flying object at Ilha da Trindade. The analysis covered observations of January 16, 1958 reported by crew members of the ship Almirante Saldanha, including photographs by a photographer.

Navy Analysis

On March 2, 1958, the Brazilian navy department published a report titled "Clarification regarding the observation of unidentified flying objects on the island of Trinidad from 12.5.57 to 16.1.58". Its conclusion was cautious: the personal accounts and the available images permitted, in the given circumstances, the indication of a possible UFO. There was no definitive confirmation, but no outright rejection either.

Witnesses and Evidence

Several crew members, among them officers and scientists, reported the object. The photographer Almiro Baraúna supplied images that were judged genuine. Earlier sightings on the island from December 1957 onward were also taken into account.

Significance

This official statement is regarded as a rare instance of military acknowledgement of UFO evidence in Brazil, which reinvigorated the debate about the Trindade sighting.
