Clan Lake: Object impacts water, rotates
On June 22, 1960, prospector John Person observed a rotating object strike Clan Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. Investigation revealed ground traces and a lakebed channel, but no object was recovered.
Background
Witness and First Observation
On June 22, 1960 at 18:20, John Person was preparing his camp at Clan Lake during a prospecting expedition and waiting for his partner. He heard something like the sound of an approaching aircraft, whereupon an object struck the ground and hit the water about 520 metres behind him.
Object Description
Person saw an object 1.2–1.8 metres across with arms or spokes, which spun rapidly, then slowed and came to a stop.
On-Site Investigation
With his partner he paddled to the spot by canoe and found burned grass and an area of cut grass. Probing with a pole revealed a channel in the lake bed, 30 cm deeper on one side and 90 cm on the other.
Official Inquiries
On July 19 and August 15, RCMP Corporal Matheson flew in by seaplane. He confirmed the impact site with the features described, but found no submerged object.
