Semipalatinsk: U-2 Powers flight over USSR sites
On April 9, 1960, Francis Gary Powers piloted a U-2 spy plane from Pakistan over key Soviet sites in Kazakhstan, evading intercepts. CIA analysis later linked over half of late 1950s-1960s UFO sightings to such high-altitude U.S. reconnaissance missions.
Background
Flight Path
On April 9, 1960, Francis Gary Powers flew a U-2 spy aircraft from Pakistan into the Soviet Union. The route went over the Semipalatinsk test site, the Dolon air base near Semey, a SAM test site near Saryshagan, and the Baikonur Cosmodrome at Tyuratam, all in Kazakhstan. Soviet air defences detected the aircraft, but it successfully evaded a MiG-19 and a Su-9. Powers landed safely on an Iranian strip at Zahedan.
UFO Connection
A 1994 CIA monograph by Gerald K. Haines estimates that more than half of all UFO reports from the late 1950s and 1960s can be attributed to manned US reconnaissance flights such as the U-2 and Oxcart (SR-71) operating over the USA. Such missions frequently produced misidentifications because of their exceptional altitude and appearance.
Significance
The case illustrates how secret military operations accounted for UFO reports without witnesses knowing their true origin. It marks an early instance of a military encounter with potentially UFO-like sightings.
