Oklahoma City: Launch of Interplanetary Intelligence Report
Hayden C. Hewes launched the first issue of the Interplanetary Intelligence Report in May 1965. The publication by his group continued until September/October 1966.
Background
Background
In May 1965, Hayden C. Hewes, head of the Interplanetary Intelligence of Unidentified Flying Objects (IIOUFO) in Oklahoma City, launched a periodical bulletin for collecting and analysing sightings of unidentified flying objects. The first issue appeared as volume 1, number 1, and marked the beginning of a short but influential series in the UFO research of the 1960s.
Details on the Publication
The bulletin carried reports of numerous UFO observations, among them lights over towns in Oklahoma, Brazil, and other regions. Later issues such as that of July 1965 discussed work by researchers such as Jacques Vallรฉe and Project Blue Book, and presented photographs of objects in South Dakota. Hewes conducted interviews with witnesses and documented incidents such as sightings at Altus AFB and Wynnewood.
Significance
The initiative helped to connect UFO enthusiasts and archived hundreds of cases during the wave of 1965. Its run until the autumn of 1966 reflects the dynamic scene in which groups such as IIOUFO contributed to the record before folding.
