Cyprus: Huge triangle tracked by RAF base radar
On August 16, 1981, radar at a British base in Cyprus tracked a large object at high speed, which stopped and hovered for 45 minutes. Witnesses photographed a bright white triangle over 700 feet long; evidence was later collected by unidentified individuals.
Background
Event Details
On August 16, 1981, a large object approached the island of Cyprus. Radar at a British sovereign base, either Akrotiri or Dhekelia, tracked it at 30,000 feet and 900 mph. It stopped abruptly and remained over the base for 45 minutes.
Witnesses and Evidence
Witnesses took numerous photographs of a brightly glowing white triangle more than 700 feet long. The Ministry of Defence had reportedly sent an encrypted message beforehand ordering a complete stand-down of aircraft in the event of unusual aerial appearances. On August 17 a man and a woman came to the base, stayed 6 hours, and took away all the photographs and other material.
Aftermath
Shortly afterwards, according to an informant, members of the US and British air forces met at RAF Lakenheath in England to discuss the case. (Source: Nick Redfern, A Covert Agenda, 1997, pp. 157β158)
