Jüchen: Red ball ejects pyramid lights
A schoolboy in Jüchen, Germany, observed a red spherical object descend, hover near power lines, and release a pyramid formation of lights toward the ground before departing. Wim van Utrecht proposes it was moonlight through clouds with crepuscular rays forming the pyramid.
Background
Witness Account
On May 24, 1983 at 18:00, a schoolboy was in his parents' garden in Jüchen, Germany. He noticed a red object that came down rapidly and hovered above nearby power lines. It gave off a pyramid-shaped arrangement of coloured lights that moved toward the ground and disappeared after a few minutes. The object then accelerated back into the sky.
Investigations and Explanations
The case was documented in specialist journals, among them the Journal für UFO-Forschung (no. 30, Nov./Dec. 1983) and the CUFOS Associate Newsletter (5, no. 1, Feb./March 1984). Hans-Werner Peiniger reported on it in detail. Wim van Utrecht re-analysed the case in 2024 and concluded that it was the moon behind clouds, with crepuscular rays producing the pyramid shape (UFO Fotocat Blog, June 15, 2024).
Significance
This CE2 case (close encounter of the second kind) shows features typical of light phenomena with a natural explanation. It illustrates the importance of examining atmospheric phenomena sceptically in UFO reports.
