1988: Steinman contacts Walker on MJ-12 members
In April 1988, William Steinman reached out to Eric A. Walker about MJ-12 members. Walker returned a coded note and later refused to discuss UFO topics.
Background
Background
In April 1988, William Steinman again contacted Eric A. Walker at his Florida home to ask about current members of the alleged MJ-12 group. Walker, a former president of Penn State University, showed interest by annotating Steinman's handwritten note.
The Coded Letter
Within a week Steinman received the note back from Penn State University, not from Florida. At the top was the handwritten instruction "Must reply, did code (β1)", together with numbers from 1 to 26 above certain words. This suggests an encoded reply addressing Steinman's questions about MJ-12.
Further Contacts
Later that month, T. Scott Crain telephoned Walker, who made clear that he could not discuss the UFO subject. These episodes follow Walker's earlier confirmations of meetings about UFO recoveries and his warnings against digging deeper.
Significance
The events illustrate continuing attempts to obtain information about secret UFO programmes, and Walker's reticence despite the coded communication. Primary source: Grant Cameron and T. Scott Crain Jr. (1991).
