Witnesses and Observation
Gary Schultz, a chemist from Santa Monica, and his wife Pearl drove to the Mailbox site near Area 51 in Nevada on February 28, 1990 at 19:30. Schultz sprang from his deckchair in surprise when he saw the first object. A new one appeared every 45 minutes, six objects in all. Two or three were bright, pulsating, ellipsoidal bodies.
Evidence and Details
Schultz used a Nikon Action Touch 35 mm camera with an f/2.8 lens and 1600 ASA Fujicolor film. One photograph clearly shows a bell-shaped object with a dome on top, taken from the gravel road looking south toward the Jumbled Hills and Groom Mountains. The images were later developed and analysed.
Significance
The case is regarded as some of the best photographic evidence for unidentified flying objects over Area 51. The images were discussed in books and videos, among others by Norio Hayakawa and Michael Hesemann. Schultz later organised expeditions to secret bases.
