English Channel: Alitalia MD-80 near miss with object
On April 21, 1991, an Alitalia MD-80 airliner over the English Channel encountered a round object approaching closely. Radar confirmed it, but authorities found no explanation.
Background
Incident
On April 21, 1991 at 20:00, Captain Achille Zaghetti and his co-pilot were flying an Alitalia McDonnell Douglas MD-80 with 57 passengers over the English Channel near the coast of Romney, Kent, England. They were preparing to land at Heathrow Airport when a round object about 3 metres long came toward them from the left, less than 30 metres away.
Witnesses and Response
The captain immediately alerted his co-pilot. Air traffic control confirmed a radar return, now behind the aircraft. The British army denied firing any missiles.
Investigation
The British Civil Aviation Authority conducted an extensive inquiry but could not establish a cause. Nick Redfern suggested an unmanned drone used for exercises.
Significance
The case is regarded as a notable near miss with an unknown object, supported by radar and official reports. It remains unresolved and contributes to debates about airspace safety.
