USA: UFO Coalition launches Abduction Monitoring Project

In 2006, the UFO Research Coalition (CUFOS, MUFON, Fund for UFO Research) initiated a project to deploy monitoring devices in homes of repeated abductees. The devices recorded environmental anomalies to check correlations with reported experiences, but analysis stalled due to lack of funds.

Background

Start of the Project

In 2006 the UFO Research Coalition, made up of CUFOS, MUFON, and the Fund for UFO Research, set up a research venture. Its aim was to install compact multi-sensor devices in the homes of people who had repeatedly reported abductions by unknown parties. These boxes were to record magnetic fields, electric fields, and atmospheric changes over extended periods.

Aims and Method

The undertaking, first called the Abduction Monitoring Project and later renamed the Ambient Monitoring Project, set out to compare the recorded data with the experiencers' accounts. The intention was to establish whether unusual readings coincided in time with the alleged incidents. The devices gathered information daily, to be evaluated centrally.

Implementation and Challenges

By 2008 there had been considerable problems with the design and construction of the units. Data were nevertheless collected from participants. A lack of funds prevented a thorough examination of the results, so that no conclusive findings were reached.

Participants and Sources

Key figures such as Tom Deuley reported on progress in the MUFON UFO Journal (issue 483, July 2008). Further material comes from Jack Brewer (2014). The project illustrates the scientific approach within UFO research despite financial obstacles.
