Las Vegas: BAASS contracts MUFON for UFO data
Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies signed a deal with MUFON on February 18, 2009, for UFO sighting alerts, investigation reports, physical samples, and database access. Bigelow also formed a Las Vegas team of scientists to support analysis.
Background
The Agreement
On February 18, 2009, Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS) agreed a collaboration with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). BAASS received reports of significant UFO observations, current investigation reports, physical evidence for analysis, and full access to MUFON's case management system.
The Team of Scientists
At the same time, Bob Bigelow assembled his own UFO team in Las Vegas. He engaged some 50 leading scientists as consultants for demanding laboratory work in support of MUFON.
Role Distribution
MUFON's STAR team acted as local investigators on routine cases, while BAASS stepped in on priority incidents, evaluated data, and compiled reports for the client. This marked a professional escalation in UFO research.
Significance
The contract formed part of the AAWSAP programme, funded with 22 million dollars from the US defence department. It underlined Bigelow's commitment and connected civilian UFO groups with state-funded science, including analyses of materials and of effects on witnesses.
