Northern New Mexico: Air Force UFO tracking plan completed

In December 1952, ATIC finalized the Air Force's instrumentation program for UFO tracking, establishing visual stations with tracking devices in northern New Mexico linked to radar nets. The plan, costing $250,000 initially and $25,000 yearly, used surplus equipment and was approved for Washington.

Background

Air Force Planning Success

In December 1952, the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) completed preparation of a comprehensive programme for instrumentation against UFOs. Options were examined ranging from simple devices for Ground Observer Corps spotters to specialised radar systems and cameras.

Details of the Facility

The final design provided for visual observation posts with tracking equipment that would record the azimuth and elevation of UFOs. These stations in northern New Mexico were to be connected by telephone and integrated into the Albuquerque–Los Alamos radar defence network.

Costs and Approval

Acquisition costs came to 250,000 dollars using existing surplus equipment, with annual operating costs of 25,000 dollars. ATIC approved and forwarded the plan to Washington. (Source: Eberhart, p. 302; Ruppelt, pp. 198–199; Clark III 918; Clark IV 1028)

Significance

This step points to the serious engagement of the USAF with UFO phenomena amid rising sightings, and aimed at precise data for identification.
