Background

Background

The chemical engineer Leon Davidson (born 1922) produced a detailed critique of the US Air Force's Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14, published in 1955, which analysed sightings of unexplained objects. He printed copies privately and distributed them from December 1956, together with his own commentary.

Analysis and Beliefs

Davidson was convinced that UFOs were secret test devices of the US government. He saw the report as a sophisticated attempt to conceal this. His focus lay above all on discrepancies between public Air Force statements and the actual data in the document. His paper "Flying Saucers: An Analysis of Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14" ran to 83 pages with illustrations and included a photocopied version of the original.

Further Editions and Significance

He published updated editions in October 1957, July 1966, January 1971, and 1976. This work influenced UFO researchers by exposing methodological gaps in official investigations and fuelled debate about government secrecy. Collections such as that of Columbia University preserve his materials.
