Southwest US AFB: Jets pursue two radar UFOs
Summer 1958 at an unidentified Air Force base in the Southwest US, radar detected two UFOs flying together. Two jets were sent to intercept, but each UFO maneuvered behind a jet and climbed out of range.
Background
Incident
In the summer of 1958, radar at an unnamed US Air Force base in the southwestern USA reported two objects flying together. Two fighters were directed to close on the targets.
Pursuit
On approach, one of the objects suddenly disappeared from the radar screen and reappeared rapidly behind the first jet. The pilot turned and tried again to catch it, but the object climbed swiftly out of range. The second pilot had a similar experience with the other target.
Witnesses and Evidence
Air Force pilots and radar operators were the principal witnesses. Radar data confirmed the manoeuvres, which resist conventional explanation. Reported in the NICAP UFO Investigator (June 1959).
Significance
The case points to repeated military encounters with manoeuvrable, radar-tracked objects that outperformed the jets. It adds to the record of early UAP phenomena.
