Background

Incident

Between 3:00 and 5:00 in the morning, a security officer at McGuire AFB (today Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst) in Burlington County, New Jersey was called out to investigate a slow-moving unidentified object over neighbouring Fort Dix. An army MP pursued the object; his radio link failed as a grey being about 1.2 metres tall, with a large head, long arms, and a slender body appeared in front of his car. The MP fired five shots at the being and one at the object.

Encounter and Shots

The UFO climbed rapidly and joined 11 other objects high in the sky, while the being fled into the woods toward the Fort Dix boundary. A patrol found the body near the McGuire runway, giving off an ammonia-like stench. The AFOSI (Air Force Office of Special Investigations) sealed off the area.

Witnesses and Aftermath

George Filer III, then a retired USAF major and later MUFON New Jersey director, was stationed at the base and confirmed the story, though he did not see the being himself. Reports suggest recovery by a special unit, possibly to Wright-Patterson AFB. The episode is regarded as a striking military encounter with physical evidence.
