Keyhoe replies to Ruppelt's business advice letter
On June 28, 1954, Donald E. Keyhoe responded to Edward Ruppelt's letter seeking career tips post-Air Force retirement. He shared insights on lecture fees, travel drawbacks, and TV's superior promotional value.
Background
Background
Donald E. Keyhoe, a prominent UFO researcher and author, received a letter from Edward J. Ruppelt, former head of Project Blue Book. Ruppelt asked for advice on giving lectures after leaving the Air Force in 1954.
The Correspondence
Keyhoe advised prioritising local appearances in order to avoid travel. He reckoned on 30 minutes for lunchtime clubs and 45–60 minutes for evening events. Long journeys such as to Milwaukee or Kansas City would eat up time and money, leaving hardly any profit. Initially they served to promote the book.
Lessons Learned
Keyhoe later realised that a single network television broadcast outdid 20 such lectures — perhaps even a hundred. This underlines his shift from travelling to media presence in the UFO debate.
Significance
The exchange shows the personal connections between UFO figures and the practical difficulties of raising awareness. Source: Curt Collins, 2023.
