Turkey: F-5A Pilot Intercepts Gray UFO
On June 17, 1969, Turkish Air Force pilot Süleyman Tekyildirim pursued a gray, bulb-shaped object over his base in a US F-5A jet, initially mistaking it for a balloon before it accelerated away at high speed.
Background
Incident
On June 17, 1969, Süleyman Tekyildirim, a pilot in the Turkish air force, was ordered to intercept an unidentified object over his military base in Turkey. He took off in a US-built F-5A Freedom Fighter and climbed above the target.
Sighting and Pursuit
The object appeared grey and had the shape of an inverted light bulb, which is why the pilot at first took it for a weather balloon. It suddenly moved to the left and accelerated at enormous speed. Tekyildirim tried to catch it, but it evaded him and disappeared rapidly from view.
Witness and Evidence Situation
As the sole witness, the experienced military pilot reported the incident in detail. There are no further independent observations or radar data, but the account comes from a reliable source (Good, Need to Know, p. 299).
Significance
This military contact illustrates how armed forces responded to unidentified objects in the 1960s and adds to the record of UAP events worldwide.
