France: Pilot UFO Catalog Published
French ufologist Dominique Weinstein published a catalog documenting 1,305 UFO sightings reported by pilots from 1916 to 2000. It categorizes cases by pilot type, radar confirmations, and electromagnetic effects on aircraft.
Background
Event
In February 2001 the French ufologist Dominique F. Weinstein compiled a comprehensive catalogue of 1,305 sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena by pilots, documented between 1916 and 2000. The report was issued by the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena (NARCAP).
Details and Categories
Of these cases, 606 (36.7 %) were reported by military pilots and crews, 444 (26.9 %) by commercial pilots, and 196 (11.8 %) by private pilots. In 200 cases (12.1 %) the visual observation was supported by airborne or ground radar. In a further 57 cases (3.45 %) pilots reported electromagnetic interference with their aircraft's transmission systems.
Significance
The catalogue is one of the largest collections of pilot-related UAP reports and underlines how often such encounters occur among professional aviators. It provides valuable data for analyses of radar performance and technical effects, which advances research into anomalous phenomena.
